What the heck do we do now? - Lon Wimberley

Good enough question! What is our mission statement? I guess we should answer that one, huh? Our mission here at our Home Group is to help you begin to figure out yours. We aren't interested in anything denominational or religious. We are interested in people. I hope that we can always be relevant to today's world. After all, the church today is called to be a refuge for the world, not from it. Keeping that in mind, we do the best we can with what we have, and try to leave the judging to the only one really good at it, God. We are interested in joining God's mission to the world. We want to be his fisherman! I hope that if you ever get a chance to visit our town and you look us up, we can hang the sign out on the front door "gone fishin". We meet in the "Living Room" at the church building. Baby sitting is provided.

Here is a quick reference to answer some of the questions that are frequently asked about our church. If you can't find the answer to your question in this document, please e-mail us.

What time is church?
Where is the Vineyard?
What is the Vineyard all about?
What does the Vineyard believe?
How did the Vineyard get started in Jackson?
How many people go to Vineyard Church of Jackson?
Is it hard to feel at home in a church your size?
Do I have to dress up to come to church?
What does Vineyard Church of Jackson do to help the community?
How do I get more connected?

What Time is Church?

Our Sunday morning services meet at 9:00 and 10:45. KForce Children's Church and childcare is available for infants through 6th grade during the 10:45 service. The children's wing is located off of the foyer and is open 15 minutes before the service. Children typically go to their classrooms before the start of service and wait for their parents or guardian to pick them up at the end of the adult service. We also have Jr. High and Sr. High youth groups that meet every other Sunday morning. They go to their class after the adult worship. For more information about where the classrooms are located, just ask the person behind the information table in the foyer.

Is it hard to feel at home in a church your size?

Although over 300 people attend worship services, there are many opportunities during the week to join small groups and build relationships. In addition, we encourage people to get involved in the many ministry opportunities at the church. For more information, take a look at our Ministries page.

What does Vineyard Church of Jackson do to help the community?

Lots of stuff! We support the work of My Father's House, an addiction recovery ministry in Jackson that maintains a high rate of success. In conjunction with My Father's House, we provide food to over a hundred families who are unable to meet their growing living expenses. We encourage people to participate in these and other outreaches.

How do I get more connected?

A good place to start is in our church foyer and coffee bar area. Here you will be able to meet people, receive information on our church, sign a visitor's card (that we use only to record your visit) and receive a complimentary Vineyard music tape or CD that we have made exclusively for first-time newcomers.

At the end of each service you can meet some of the church leaders and other friendly people. You will find all kinds of information about the church and our activities, as well as be able to talk to the people who could answer your questions.

One of the best ways to get connected is just to JUMP IN! Go visit a small group study during the week, volunteer to serve in one of the many ministries, or participate in an upcoming activity. It is easier than you think to be part of the family!

Worship - Worship

Worship is of great importance to us. It is through our time of worship when we experience the Presence of God in our lives and have an opportunity to direct our thoughts and feelings toward Him. God, in turn, often uses worship to heal people, to generate passion, and to communicate to our hearts. Our time in His Presence through worship is a foretaste of things to come.

Bruce Wimberley ,Senior PastorElaine Wimberley, Co-Pastor

Pastor Bruce Wimberley was born and raised in Texas. In his teenage years Pastor Bruce participated in an youth group that was "on-fire for Jesus" at a local Baptist church. It was here, at age 13, that Pastor Bruce dedicated his life to full time ministry. However, he never felt that the openings in the denominational setting were exactly what God was calling him to, so he simply waited for more direction from God. During this waiting period, Pastor Bruce married Elaine, fathered three children, served as an Army Lieutenant, became a rancher, farmer, teacher, and deacon. His exeriences in these roles have provided Pastor Bruce with a wealth of sermon illustrations. No experience is ever wasted!

In 1969-70, God's direction took Bruce into leadership of a small Bible study group which expanded into a worship and praise group with the move of the Holy Spirit that was sweeping the world at that time. Before long (1977), a number of people in this group felt led of the Lord to move with Pastor Bruce and his wife Elaine to Jackson, Mississippi to plant a church. This was the seed of the church that was adopted into the Vineyard in 1993.

Elaine has been married to Bruce for forty-five years. They grew up in the same city in Texas, went to the same High School, same church, participated in the same Youth Group and God was knitting their lives together and setting them on the same course all that time. Both of them felt called to some kind of ministry that was not yet defined, but they knew God called them to life together. They were married while in still in college.

Elaine said, "God put Bruce and I together so that our abilities and personalities could be complementary and together we could serve Him better than either could separately. I have adjusted to many different roles that God has had for Bruce and therefore for me as co-laborer. There was always a knowing that God was being purposeful in our journey, even though I often felt impatient with the process. All the experiences have proven valuable and along the way I learned to not forsake joy just because I felt impatient with the experience that was on my plate. Today, it is my true joy to serve as Co-Pastor at Vineyard Church."

Today Pastor Bruce leads the Vineyard Church of Jackson, serves as the head of Vineyard missions partnership for Colombia, South America, and both he and Elaine serve on the Vineyard Missionary Care Team for Vineyard missionaries world wide.

How Can You Help Colombia? - How Can I Help?

First of all, you can pray for the people of Colombia and for the work that is being done by our workers there. Safety is a concern for all. Pray that these workers bring light into this country, to reach out to those who are lost and hurting and bring God's love and healing to the people.

Second, consider active ways you can participate in the Colombian outreach. All of the growth occurring in this country require Christians to teach, minister, befriend, and serve these churches and communities through small teams of people going over and spending several days with them. Vineyard Church of Jackson, who is primarily involved with the U.S. support of Colombian missions can help you fulfill this vision. Give us a call at 601.919.1414.

Finally, as with all work, financial support is needed and always appreciated. Money provides the initial start-up funds for church plants. It provides for computers and Internet service for Colombian pastors in order to stay in touch with the rest of the Vineyard internationally. Funds are used to provide Christian literature in Spanish, to bring the pastors together for conferences and training seminars, and to meet emergency needs.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to Colombian missions, you can make your checks payable to "Vineyard Church of Jackson" with "Colombia Missions" in the memo line. We will transfer the funds to the Colombian pastors. You can mail your donation to:

"Then Jesus made a circuit of all the towns and villages. He taught in their meeting places, reported kingdom news, and healed their diseased bodies, healed their bruised and hurt lives. When he looked out over the crowds, his heart broke. So confused and aimless they were, like sheep with no shepherd. 'What a huge harvest!' he said to his disciples. 'How few workers! On your knees and pray for harvest hands!'"

What a Sunday morning celebration might look like - What Can I Expect?

There are two Sunday morning worship services. The first starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends around 10:15 a.m. The second service begins at 10:45 a.m. and ends at noon. The services are essentially identical with the same music and message and are offered twice simply as a matter of convenience to you. There is a full children's program during the 10:45 service, also.

You are welcome to come early to mingle at the coffee bar.

Dress is casual, so come as you are!

The Service

We start each service with a time of worship.

We use solid Biblical teaching and are concerned about making the Christian faith understandable and relevant to those we serve.

Nursery and children's church programs are provided during the 10:45 Sunday morning celebration.

The services last around 75 minutes.

Our hope and prayer is that you will feel welcomed, loved, and accepted. We also want you to sense the reality of our faith and experience God's awesome presence.

About the Association of Vineyard Churches - Vineyard Association

The Association of Vineyard Churches is one of the fastest growing church-planting movements in the world. The Vineyard story is about ordinary people who worship and serve an extraordinary God. The Vineyard is simply one thread in the rich tapestry of the historic and global Church of Jesus Christ. But it is a thread of God's weaving.

From the beginning, Vineyard pastors and leaders have sought to hold in tension the biblical doctrines of the Christian faith with an ardent pursuit of the present day work of the Spirit of God. Maintaining that balance is never easy in the midst of rapid growth and renewal.

In 1982, John Wimber-a pastor and church consultant-was asked to serve as the leader of a newly-formed association of about nine churches (all in Southern California) that called themselves the "Vineyard". As the leader of this new movement, known as the Association of Vineyard Churches, John pastored the pastors and trained and encouraged the planting of churches internationally. John died in November 1997.

Worldwide, Vineyard churches have been planted in many nations including the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Russia, Turkey, throughout the European continent, Africa, Southeast Asia, and in Australia.

The Association of Vineyard Churches is a diverse group of churches that partner together to advance the kingdom of God by communicating the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed. Through many localized expressions, Vineyard churches aim to:Worship God and stand on the ancient truth of the Scripture, the guide for faith, life, and service. Grow as a people of both the Word and Spirit, imbued with power for the purpose of making and nurturing mature disciples of Jesus Christ. Create reproducing missional communities of worship, discipleship, evangelism and service. Serve the Father in the power of the Spirit, following Jesus' holistic and incarnational ministry of proclaiming and manifesting the kingdom of God.

¡Bienvenidos à la Viña de Colombia! - Missions

Vineyard missions are accomplished through the partnership of several churches to support the work in a particular country. Mission work in foreign countries is not financed at the national level in Vineyard, but through the contributions of individuals and churches within the movement.

Vineyard Church of Jackson has been supporting church planting and other ministries in the South American country of Colombia for many years. Pastor Bruce and several members of our church have travelled to Colombia countless times to equip native Christians in that country to lead people to a knowledge of God's love and His Kingdom. The fruit that has resulted has been a great encouragement to our church.

The pastors in Colombia are owners in the work they do, realistic in their accomplishments, seeing problems and setting goals for solutions. They are teachable and called of God - a GREAT group of men!

Colombia has several regions that are often dangerous for Christian workers to spread God's love and message to others. Therefore, our site purposely does not reveal names or photos that identify the Vineyard workers in Colombia. However, since the work there is so exciting, we do want to share some of the news of some of the churches in the country. Please click on the links to the left for more information on these churches and how you can help.

The Vineyard in Colombia also has a website that you can visit at http://www.lavina.8m.com/.BogotaMedellinEl PopularHow Can I Help?

Vineyard Church of Jackson - Who We Are

Vineyard Church of Jackson started out as a nondenominational church called Community Covenant Church. Believing that a church should be part of a larger organization so that there was oversight and accountability, Pastor Bruce Wimberley began seeking a place where this church could identify and belong. After about 3 years of 'courtship' with the Association of Vineyard Churches, Community Covenant became "Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Jackson" on September 10, 1993.

It was easy to identify with the values of the Association of Vineyard Churches, especially the emphasis on worship, which was already of prime importance to the congregation. "Doin' the stuff" that the New Testament describes as the activities of a church was a natural thing to do, not something that required hype and emotionalism. Best of all, in Vineyard there was an emphasis on reality and the fact that all Christians are called to and able to do some type of ministry, especially praying for people and their spiritual and physical needs.

In 2000, Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Jackson was officially renamed "Vineyard Church of Jackson" to better identify our role to others as a church in the Jackson metro area.Meet Our StaffWhy We're HereWhat We BelieveWhat We ValueOur PrioritiesVineyard Association

We're not much into bench-warming. The fact is, we were created for more than just going to work, paying the bills, and taking the occasional trip to the beach. We've been empowered to proclaim and demostrate the Kingdom of God to the world around us. It's not always convenient, and undoubtedly takes sacrifice; but anything that's worthwhile requires sacrifice.

With all the different ministries at the Vineyard we guarantee you'll be able to find some place to jump in and serve. So, snoop around. Check a few out.
El Popular - El Popular

The El Popular church, probably one of the most exciting churches in this area, is located in a very impoverished and dangerous section of Medellin. The people sleep on the floor in the back of their homes so the bullets coming into the front don't hit them!

The church is very organized and functions primarily through the work of teenagers because their parents work 12 hours a day. The adult pastors of the El Popular church are experienced church planters. This shows in their pastoring and organizational skills.

The El Popular church is truly taking light into darkness and changing a barrio one block at a time. Please pray for their safety and their efforts to bring healing into this wounded area.

Medellin - Medellin

The church in Medellin is comprised of mainly university students, but they are shifting their emphasis to reach couple and families. Several strong leaders assist the Medellin pastor, making a well-rounded gift mix. With these talented laborers reaching out to the community, significant growth is expected in the upcoming year.

As with many in Colombia, financial difficulties are a major concern. Medellin's pastor is attending the university there to earn a degree in social work. This will allow him to become bi-vocational, with reasonable work hours. However, this is more than a year away.

The pastor's wife has a Saturday job, when he can stay home with their children. She only makes $100 a month.

Please keep the work in Medellin in your prayers as they reach out to young families in the area.

Bogota - Bogota

The church in Bogota is very significant because it is in the capitol city of Colombia. This is critical to developing a national Vineyard presence in this country.

This church consists of well-educated, mostly middle- and upper-middle class people. In 2001, Pastor Bruce Wimberley ordained the pastor of the Bogota church, a native Colombian. The pastor's wife in this church is a nurse and works in a variety of positions. She is also a gifted teacher and is able to preach when the pastor is out of town.

In 2000, the church rented a large warehouse that was formerly a TV production studio. It has office space, kitchen space, and rooms for the children's Sunday School. However, there is a problem because the rent is increased a lot every six months! Without rapid growth, it will become too expensive; even though this is a middle-class congregation, there is no abundance of money. Inflation an unemployment do damage in every class.

The Bogota church is blessed by several men and women with gifts of serving and helps. They have several opportunities to use these giftings every week!

Please keep the Bogota church in your prayers as they grow and minister to the people in the Colombian capitol.

Our Priorities - Our Priorities

Worship. Worship is perhaps the highest priority of the Vineyard. We focus on our God during worship - praising Him, honoring Him, expressing our love, opening our hearts to Him in intimacy and inviting Him to make Himself known to us. The atmosphere during our times of worship is informal, but focused and carefully led. Whether we are shouting in celebration or singing a quiet love song, we have a seriousness about being in the presence of our God. Our music is fresh and contemporary. We encourage free expression without looking for conformity. Word of God. We are completely committed to the authority of the Bible. It is the foundation of our teaching ministry and the basis for evaluating ideas and experiences. We want to proclaim the eternal truth of God in a way that helps people know God intimately, experience His goodness and love, live life in obedience and integrity and take His love to the world. Our teaching is practical, easy to understand, relevant, encouraging and challenging. Fellowship. We value relationships as an integral part of following Jesus and a primary way that our faith grows and finds expression. Therefore, we value honest communication, openness, mutual support and accountability in the context of committed, loving friendships. We have found that healing and change come most naturally in trusting relationships. Ministry. We believe that Jesus calls us not just to know, but to do. Therefore, we are committed to taking the kingdom of God to the world - offering salvation through forgiveness in Jesus, praying for the sick and hurting, befriending the lonely, bringing light into darkness, feeding the poor and working for a righteous society. Training. We believe strongly that the ministry of the church is for all of God's people. Therefore, our goal is to communicate vision for the Kingdom of God, and to help people do the work that they feel called to do. Our leadership is here not so much to do the work of ministry as to equip the church to do the work of ministry. Our training includes teaching the Bible and providing hands on training - visible demonstrations of ministry, opportunities for seasoned ministers to work with newer ministers, and numerous opportunities to do ministry. Sending. We are committed to touching the nations of the earth. We believe that we grow when we minister beyond our everyday context. Therefore, we are committed to sending teams on ministry trips both locally and internationally.

What We Value - What We Value

Presence of God. We value the presence of God in our midst. Especially during worship and in times of ministry, we give room for God to make Himself known and to touch us with His Spirit. Leadership of the Holy Spirit. We value the direction of God and are committed to seeking Him and following Him. Therefore, we desire to hear from God in prayer as we make decisions and to follow the directives of the Holy Spirit as we conduct meetings. We desire to remain open to Him and to value His voice more than our own plans. Kingdom of God. We believe that Jesus came to earth to establish a kingdom in which He rules with power, justice and mercy. We believe that Jesus has called His church to advance His kingdom in the earth, to participate with Him in bringing His rule to individuals and societies. Therefore, we value His active rule among us and value opportunities to demonstrate His power, justice and mercy. Prayer. We value communication with God very highly. We value private, personal prayer, as well as corporate prayer. And we believe that God values our prayers. We desire to live our lives, personally and corporately, in a way that commits significant time to prayer. Sovereignty of God. God rules His creation with infinite power, complete authority and perfect wisdom. He responds to prayer, but He obeys neither person nor formula, and He does what He chooses in any situation for his own purposes. Therefore, we value humility before Him and are careful not to explain away the mysteries of His ways. Spiritual Gifts. We believe that all the spiritual gifts listed in the Bible are operative in the church today. We value the proper exercise of all the gifts in a Biblically informed way under the guidance of pastoral leadership. Since the Holy Spirit gives gifts for the common good of the whole church, we value humility and accountability in the exercise of gifts and we avoid equating gifts with spiritual maturity. Mercy. Jesus has shown great mercy to us. Therefore, we value mercy in our fellowship. We desire to show mercy in our relationships with each other and to demonstrate His mercy to the unbelieving world. Healing. We believe that Jesus came to break the power of sin and right the hurtful effects of sin. Though that will not be realized fully until He returns, His reign today nonetheless brings real victory over sin in all areas of life. Therefore, we value the Lord's healing work - spiritually, emotionally and physically - and desire to create an environment in which we realize His healing power. Authenticity. We value honesty, integrity and authenticity. We desire to be real in our relationships with each other and real in our presentation of the work of God in His church. We desire not to manipulate people or play on emotions. We desire not to pretend that God is doing something He is not really doing. We value emotional honesty and leave room for great emotional expression, but we do not like hype. The Individual. We respect each individual person. We desire to hold uncompromising standards of behavior and to encourage growth and healing while at the same time respecting each person's private journey with God. We do not desire to pressure any person. Growth Toward Maturity. We value personal growth because we believe God values it. We believe that God calls us to more than just salvation and church attendance. He calls us to a growing, intimate relationship with Himself, to observable growth in personal character and to an increasing concern for His purposes in the world. Personal Character. Christian growth is not just about experience or happiness or Bible knowledge. In an increasingly character-less society, we value deeply the character of Jesus formed in us and demonstrated through us. We avoid legalism energetically, but we are absolutely committed to developing holiness. The Family. We value the family highly. We are committed to the integrity of marriage and to the central importance of good parenting. We desire to support, protect and strengthen families and equip them for life and ministry in our culture. Relationships. We value relationships as integral to Christian maturity. We desire to ensure that relationships are more important than programs in the life of our church.

What We Believe - What We Believe

We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired, infallible, the essential and only rule of faith and life.We believe in God, eternally existing as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe that God created the universe and all that is in it, and that it was good when He did so.We believe that man sinned and brought upon himself the penalty of death and upon the world the state of sin and brokenness we find today. We believe that God chose the Jews of the Old Testament to be the bearers of His message of forgiveness, and to be the people through whom a Savior would come.We believe that Jesus Christ was that Savior, the Son of God, fully God and fully man, born of a virgin, without sin, perfectly revealing the Father, calling humanity to repentance, forgiveness and relationship with God.We believe that He died on the cross for the forgiveness of sins, and that he rose bodily from the dead, fully victorious over sin and death. We believe that through him, we can have forgiveness of our sins and a relationship with God. Because Jesus Christ is the only Son of God, we believe that forgiveness and restoration is found only in him.We believe that He will return to the earth visibly and in awesome power to bring history as we know it to an end.We believe that the Holy Spirit empowers believers in Jesus to know God, to live an effective, godly life, and to minister powerfully to a hurting world. We believe in the proper exercise of all the biblical gifts of the Holy Spirit. We believe in the reality of an unseen world - angels, demons, Satan. We believe that God's plan for the ages is particularly found in his plan for the church and that the ordinary means of growth and ministry for believers is the local church

Vineyard Church of Jackson exists to produce mature, reproducing Christians and to plant mature, reproducing churches. By maturity we mean lives and churches that are built on the Bible and that express the balanced priorities of the Bible and God's kingdom. By reproducing we mean lives and churches that generate other mature Christians and churches. Blessing is not for us alone; it is to be given away.

God's Purpose for Vineyard Church of JacksonWe will be a dynamic and exciting church where people can regularly experience the power and Presence of God. We will be a church that shares and cares. We will be a people who are real and are genuinely spiritual. We will be a church that prays, both corporately and individually. We will be a people who recognize that the Bible is the Word of God and it applies in practical ways to our lives today. We will be a church that cares about the destiny of those who do not know Christ.

"And now you are living stones that are being used to build a spiritual house. You are also a group of holy priests, and with the help of Jesus Christ you will offer sacrifices that please God." - 1 Peter 2:5 CEV
